3 nutritionist tips to reset your healthy habits

How you live, feel, and think ultimately comes down to cultivating healthy habits that determine your day.

While it can be tempting to try and create perfect habits all at once, starting with small positive changes that are easy to integrate into your routine will help you to build sustainable habits without feeling overwhelmed.

Two of the most important tips I’ve learnt along the way to having healthy habits are:

  1. Having an achievable goal to work towards
  2. Make sure you’re doing something you enjoy

It takes time and dedication to form healthy habits, so don’t get discouraged if you slip up. Life can be unpredictable. Take it one day at a time and stay motivated.

Here are three easy tips to reset your healthy habits, for a healthier you.

1. Boost your energy with protein

Did you know that many of us aren't getting enough protein on a daily basis? Starting your day with enough protein (at least 20g+) is the best way to get your energy flowing. Protein is essential for maintaining steady energy levels and keeping you fuller for longer. Starting your day off with a delicious nourishing high protein meal will give you a boost of energy and help you kick-start your day.

My favourite high protein meal ideas

Eggs are one of my favourite effortless yet delicious go-to high-protein foods either for breakfast snacks or in addition to a meal. Eggs contain a complete source of protein, meaning that they are made up of all the essential amino acids. They also contain  vitamin B12, which helps with energy production. I am currently obsessed with jammy semi-soft-boiled eggs drenched in chili oil, YUM!

Nuts, seeds and chickpeas are healthy and easy snacks packed with protein, healthy fats and fibre, providing slow-release energy throughout the day. I love adding tamari toasted nuts and seeds to salads or stir-fries for added protein, flavour and crunch.

Greek yogurt is another fantastic source of protein, it is also packed with probiotics to boost digestive health. Dollop it on top of your protein pancakes or add to your smoothie or granola.

If you’re looking for a convenient protein hit or you’re always on the go, having a protein powder on hand to whip up a quick shake or nourishing smoothie is the best and easiest way to get extra protein in. I also love to add protein powders to baking or porridge.

Handy tips:

  • Be sure to add protein to every meal, especially breakfast
  • Keep healthy protein-packed snacks on hand like nuts and seeds, hummus or protein powder. I love to make a batch of my oaty protein bar and keep it in the freezer for when I'm in a rush.
  • Make it delicious and fun so getting in more protein is always an enjoyable treat – you're body will thank you for it.

2. Get in green goodness

Greens are so important for your overall wellbeing and energy production, they’re a powerhouse vegetable with an array of essential nutrients, fibre and antioxidants. Similarly to protein, many of us don’t get enough greens onto our plates each day.

Who said greens are boring or flavourless? Try new ways of preparing and adding greens to your day for mouth-watering goodness. I love flavour-packed green pestos sauce with fresh herbs, spinach, zucchini and garlic. Or add leafy greens such as spinach and kale to your smoothies. Easy, and delicious.

We all have days when we don't get as many greens on our plates as we would like, and that's okay. I keep a  greens power on hand for those exact occasions. For more goodness and a healthy daily boost, green powders are an easy choice.

Handy tips:

  • Raw spinach and kale are great for their high antixodiant levels
  • Buy in season for the best quality and to keep it budget friendly
  • Try not to overcook your greens, rather lightly saute or barbeque
  • Keep your freezer stocked full of green goodness

3. Feel good with movement in nature

Taking a few mindful moments each day to get out into nature has endless benefits for your mental and physical wellbeing. Making an intentional effort to reconnect with nature through outdoor activities is an excellent habit to cultivate. When I’m feeling overwhelmed or imbalanced, connecting with nature helps to ground myself and bring calm back into my day. Not to mention the feel-good endorphin hit that always boosts my mood.

Handy tips:

  • Start off small - a 20-minute stroll is all you need
  • Keep it fun - explore somewhere new
  • Take a friend and decompress together from your day – it's a win-win
