The second of the water soluble B group vitamins is vitamin B2, or riboflavin. This is the vitamin responsible for the yellow/orange colour of your B Complex vitamin tablet, and the bright yellow urine it produces.

Riboflavin acts as a coenzyme in the body in many processes of cell metabolism. Key roles are in energy production, and metabolising fats, ketones, carbohydrates and proteins for healthy growth and tissue repair.

Essential for maintaining oral and eye health, iron absorption, red blood cell production and the health of hair, skin and nails, vitamin B2 also has important roles in thyroid and adrenal gland function. Antibody production, mucous membrane health and maintaining digestive tract function are all dependent on riboflavin.

Vitamin B2 Benefits

The classic signs of riboflavin deficiency are mouth, eye and genital symptoms. A combination of cracks at the corner of the mouth, photophobia and scrotal dermatitis are indications that vitamin B2 supplementation may be needed.

Other signs that vitamin B2 might be deficient are red and cracked lips, inflamed mouth or tongue, mouth ulcers and a sore throat. Dry scaly skin, itchy bloodshot and photosensitive eyes, fluid build-up in mucous membranes and iron deficiency anemia can all be due to vitamin B2 deficiency.

Vitamin B2 Side Effects and Contraindications

Safe when taken as directed. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) should always be taken in conjunction with a B complex supplement, as all the B group vitamins need to be present in the correct ratio for optimal effect. It is a necessary cofactor in vitamin B6 activation and assists the body to utilise niacin.
