Cranberries are a group of creeping shrubs or vines in the plant genus Vaccinium. They are related to bilberries, blueberries and huckleberries. Cranberries contain compounds which prevent E. coli bacteria from colonising the urinary tract, reducing the risk of the urinary tract infection cystitis.

Used by Native Americans as food, for dyes and medicinally for wound care, Cranberry is also recognised for its anti-oxidant properties.

Cranberry Benefits

Cranberry’s main benefits are its antioxidant effect and protection against urinary tract infections. As well as its preventative role, cranberry also helps relieve the pain and burning sensation of cystitis once an infection is present.

Research indicates the anti-adhesion effect of cranberry which protects the urinary tract may also protect other systems from inflammatory conditions associated with bacterial infection.

Stomach ulcers, kidney stones and periodontal gum disease may all be helped by cranberry supplements.

As naturally rich sources of potassium, magnesium and several antioxidant factors, cranberries provide immune system support and benefit cardiovascular health.
