Colic is often described when a baby is crying, showing distress and discomfort for no apparent reason. It can be incredibly stressful for caregivers and there can be multiple reasons for the uncomfortable feelings that baby is experiencing, making it challenging to resolve.

When an otherwise healthy baby cries for a few hours, usually in the evening, from about 6 weeks of age until 4 – 5 months old, colic is the common culprit. Usually it can be obvious that something to do with the digestive tract is contributing when relief is provided from passing gas, or when it happens shortly after feeding.

There are many theories for why colic occurs including the immaturity of the baby’s digestive tract - either not tolerating food or because sphincters haven’t developed fully and closed appropriately, causing pain. When food is the issue, it can be something that is passed through the mother’s breast milk that the baby is reacting to, or it can be formulas.

Foods that are commonly problematic are cow milk and dairy products, sugar, onion, garlic, spices, and vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower. It’s important for the breastfeeding mother to keep her diet clean, simple, and low in problematic foods. If baby is formula fed, talking with a professional about the best type of low-allergen formula is a good option.
